NEW! Get More Than 500 Free and Low-Cost Ideas to Reach More Buyers of Handmade Crafts
In September of 2008, when the stock market crashed and forecasts for most of the economy looked pretty bleak, Etsy.com the leader in web sites that sell handmade items reported a 5% increase over sales in August. Over 500,000 items sold in September bringing in almost $8 million. In all, Etsy tripled its sales in 2008 over 2007, racking in more than $90 million in sales for the year. Remember, this is happening during and in spite of the worst economic downturn of our generation. In the 3 months after Christmas of this last year, 2008 to early March of this year, 2009, more than 150,000 items that included the word “handmade” have sold on eBay. That's 150,000 items selling in the months of January, February and March which are typically the slowest months of the year for craft sales even in a good economy. Getting your share of online craft sales? The good news is that those who sell handmade crafts are in one of those businesses that are prospering during this recession.
